Description: Biomechanical measurements and tests For testing medical devices, such as implants or endoprostheses, or biological and technical materials, dynamic and quasi-static testing machines are available in the laboratory for biomechanics.

Ready-made test set-ups already exist for various test standards. For testing according to other standards or for special tests without a relevant standard, the lab can realise suitable test set-ups at short notice.

Such test set-ups are particularly relevant for testing indication-specific implants that cannot be tested with existing standards.

In addition to the test machines, you can also find the micro-electronics laboratory for the construction of special electronics, for example, control electronics for test equipment or portable sensor systems.

Baltic Fracture Competence Centre, Medical technology
Description: The Baltic Fracture Competence Centre (BFCC) project was funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2014-2020 and ran from March 2016 until February 2019. It brought together 13 organisations from seven countries around the Baltic Sea and was part of the flagship project HealthRegion of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The BFCC built up a pan-Baltic cooperation network fostering innovation within fracture management. During the project’s lifetime the BFCC set up local fracture registries at hospitals around the Baltic Sea Region and linked them together in one transnational fracture registry. This first transnational registry supports hospitals and companies in the Baltic Sea Region in identifying needs and potentials for innovation within fracture management.

Description: In the project "FucoSan - Health from the Sea", experts investigated fucoidan as a bioactive ingredient of brown algae and its properties. How can this ingredient best be extracted, characterised and used in medicine and cosmetics?
Eight partner organisations from Germany and Denmark worked on this Interreg Deutschland-Danmark project from February 2017 to August 2020. Focus activities comprised
1) algae sourcing, cultivation and collection,
2) fucoidan characterisation and database development,
3) pilot developments in medicine (ophthalmology, orthopaedics) and cosmetics, and 4) organisation and business models.

FucoSan Network, Biotechnology
Description: An important, still little used marine bioresource is available with the algae in the North and Baltic Seas. Algae components with various health-promoting properties include fucoidans, which are derived from brown algae. The completed FucoSan project examined these fucoidans for their potential applications in medicine and cosmetics. In the process, much basic knowledge was acquired about the cultivation, extraction and chemical and biological characterisation of fucoidans. Furthermore, networks, economic ecosystem roles and challenges for the commercialisation of fucoidans were identified, and business models along the value chain were developed. But the biggest challenge was to close the gap between basic research and competitive production. Therefore, the network project aimed to continue and intensify the previous cooperation.
Therefore, the FucoSan network aimed to develop long-term concepts eligible for funding from external funding bodies to ensure continuous and sustainable development of Fucoidan-based applications in the region. To this end, the existing Fucoidan network in the German-Danish border region was significantly expanded. In addition, awareness of the potential of Fucoidans was increased, and the exchange and encounter with politics, administration and other cluster organisations grew. In addition, application-oriented research and product development were further developed, focusing on the application of fucoidans. Here, the very promising results of the FucoSan project (2017-2020) were used to identify and develop new projects and research opportunities.

Description: The joint international Master Medical Microtechnology develops the core competencies of the three institutions Technische Hochschule Lübeck, Universität zu Lübeck and SDU Sønderborg in the areas of health, engineering and life sciences and strengthens the cooperation between science, industry and clinics in the field of health technologies in the German-Danish region.
The program explicitly addresses the area of miniaturization, which on the one hand covers the entire field of minimally invasive surgery (endoscopes, instruments, surgical robots) and on the other hand, e.g. includes implants for drug delivery. The integration of sensors and actuators leads to new diagnosis and therapy options.

Description: Companies can test solutions in simulation facilities at the Learning and Research Center (LFH) and clinical environment at the Sygehus Sønderjylland (SHS). This hospital consists of an emergency hospital in Aabenraa, a specialist hospital in Sønderborg and a day hospital in Tønder. SHS emphasises digital and technological solutions that promote and monitor treatment processes, and efficient workflows and increase patient involvement and sector collaboration.
LFH oversees innovation projects and product testing, matching needs and requirements between the company and clinical departments. In addition, LFH has a reputable collaboration with surrounding municipalities, educational institutions and Southern Danish Health Innovation.
LFH has three fully equipped medical wards, one shower/toilet room and one simulation room for medical and digital training, product and prototype demonstration, and testing of hospital equipment and technological welfare solutions. Over 7000 participants are educated and guided by LFH in simulation-based medical and digital training annually.
